Lucky you: The National MP3s

Like many reasonable men, I chose The National's Alligator as my favorite album of 2005. It snagged that title by a very wide margin, as I found myself listening to the CD for about four months straight. Every day for four months straight. Almost every time I played it, I'd hear something new and moving. I'd find a fresh way to interpret one of Matt Berninger's surrealistic riddles or find another haunting melody to occupy the basement of my brain. But so what, right? That's old news to anyone who's heard the record. And considering the band's much-merited media breakthrough, that amounts to a lot of people. What still puzzles me though is why their back catalogue isn't more celebrated. I've been following The National since their 2001 self-titled debut, and even then it was evident that this was something special.
