Rock so tough: Mas Y Mas MP3s

Chicago had Bellow and Sandburg. Paris got Miller and Seurat. But DC, those lucky, non-President-voting-for bastards, get more than they deserve in the madcap art-rock anarchy of Mas Y Mas. Bopping and bashing their way through their new full-length, Proud Sponsors of Pepsi, Mas Y Mas dish out more nonsequitur shoutouts, absurd detours and flippant pronouncements than a C-SPAN-watching marathon. Throw in a tongue so firmly in cheek that it leaves a bruise and an unwavering commitment to revelry and ass-kicking, and you have me seriously contemplating enduring the tortoise-paced terror of the Chinatown bus to experience this mayhem firsthand.

They pretty much drop the same advice in "DC Instead," recommending, "Oh, you should take a magic bus right down to Anacostia/ Chat with all the winsome locals, some were former Redskins hopefuls/ They all have Ph.D.s in post-post-post-post-post-post-something." Those are the kinds of smirk-worthy details they sprinkle throughout their patented mash of erratic guitar and aerobics-on-speed electronic beats. Those are the kinds of details, along with calling out "the megachurches up in McLean" and having "more hard rock than Marion Barry", that made their EP Latin Outreach so incredibly indispensable. Proud Sponsors of Pepsi is thankfully just as essential, a maniacally outlandish and idiosyncratic romp from a band that I just can't get enough of. If only DC had a few electors to throw their way, I'd be starting up a Mas Y Mas For President campaign right about now.

Mas Y Mas is playing at The Black Cat in DC on May 31st.

Get their new CD Proud Sponsors of Pepsi for the sick price of only 5 bucks here.
